Taylor Bowls Super Challenge 2016-17
Tranmere Bowling Club entered three teams into the Taylor Bowls Super Challenge Series for the 2016-17 season, with the Bronze North team going on to win the grand final in the Bronze Division for the third time in four years.
When the season started back in early November 2016 and with the team losing in the first two rounds, it wasn’t looking promising. The third round was postponed. However, from the fourth round on, the team did not lose another game, winning the remaining four rounds, and the four finals matches!
The grand-final held at Modbury on 2 April was against Clarence Gardens (their first finals appearance in the Taylor Cup). It was good team victory, winning three of the four rinks. Roger Kairl continued his focussed and steadfast winning form in the singles. The “odd-couple” pairing of Max Duggan and Richard Ellis triumphed again in the pairs, with many a comical quip from Max heard on the sidelines. The triples, Tom Lycett, Nick Cirocco and Mike Porter had a convincing win which was still a nail-biter at 11-all with four ends left. The fours, Ann Ellis, Bob Bussenschutt, Eddie Dolan and David Mealor, fought out the game well, but were beaten on the day. Two more squad members, Brenda Porter and Veronica Dolan, also contributed to the team’s success in the finals.
The team was ably managed by Eddie Dolan, with Veronica supporting and collecting the $5 from players each week! The team was strongly supported by the largest and most vocal contingent of supporters throughout the finals.
After the grand-final, individual medals and a large trophy were presented, along with a sizeable cheque to the club (quickly seized by Mike Porter!). In total, our three Taylor Challenge Series teams earned the club $1830.
Well done, Tranmere!
